Texas Cupgrass is a perennial, warm-season grass that grows into bunches with tangled roots attached to individual stalks. It is utilized by granivorous birds such as Painted Buntings, and seeds are also consumed by small mammals.

Texas Cupgrass prefers full sun and grows best on hills, well-drained prairies, mostly in protected, moist areas. It prefers clay and clay loam soils.
