Maclura pomifera (Osage Orange)

Also known as Bois d'arc, Horse Apple, and Hedge Apple.

Osage Orange is a tough, fast-growing deciduous tree with distinctive large, bumpy, green fruits. It is extremely durable, resistant to rot, and one of the hardest North American woods. Historically used for fence posts and bows. The dense canopy provides good shade and wildlife cover. Birds and squirrels eat the seeds. Tolerates drought, wet soil, poor soil, heat, and wind. Thorny when young; a good wildlife hedge.
